{"id":579,"date":"2018-04-20T19:08:09","date_gmt":"2018-04-20T23:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/darwin.eeb.uconn.edu\/uncommon-ground\/?p=579"},"modified":"2018-04-20T19:08:09","modified_gmt":"2018-04-20T23:08:09","slug":"made-it-to-brisbane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/darwin.eeb.uconn.edu\/uncommon-ground\/blog\/2018\/04\/20\/made-it-to-brisbane\/","title":{"rendered":"Made it to Brisbane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s among the longest stretch of (planned) travel that I\u2019ve done.<sup><a id=\"ffn1\" href=\"#fn1\" class=\"footnote\">1<\/a><\/sup> I <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>left Hartford at 11:45am EDT on Thursday, April 19<\/li>\n<li>arrived in Cinncinnati at 1:53pm, <\/li>\n<li>left Cinncinnati at 2:45pm, <\/li>\n<li>arrived in Los Angeles at 4:45pm PDT,<\/li>\n<li>left Los Angeles at 10:30, and<\/li>\n<li>arrived in Brisbane at 5:30am Australian Eastern time on <em><strong>Saturday<\/strong><\/em>, April 21.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u2019s a 14 hour time difference between Brisbane and Hartford. That makes the total travel time 27 hours, 45 minutes gate to gate. I arrived at my hotel about 2 1\/2 hours ago. Remarkably, they had a room they could give me, even though the official check in time isn\u2019t until 2:00pm. It\u2019s a very comfortable room in what appears to be a very nice part of the city. I don\u2019t have any meetings until tomorrow. Once I\u2019ve finished up a couple of things I want to do, I\u2019m going to put on some comfortable shoes and go for a walk around town with my camera. First stop, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brisbane.qld.gov.au\/facilities-recreation\/parks-venues\/parks\/city-botanic-gardens\">City Botanic Gardens<\/a>. I\u2019ll miss the farmer\u2019s market, which is held tomorrow, and I\u2019m not sure what I\u2019ll visit after the botanic gardens, but I\u2019m going to keep going all day. If I can go to bed at something resembling a normal time, there\u2019s a good chance I\u2019ll escape the worst effects of jet lag tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The photo is the view from my hotel room.<\/p>\n<ol id=\"footnotes\">\n<li id=\"fn1\">A few years ago it took me 3 1\/2 days to get home from Capetown. I was stranded in Amsterdam for 2 nights. Yes I mean stranded. The first night I was stuck in the airport.
