Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA)
This lecture may seem a bit like deja vu all over again. Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) is a generalization of Wright's F-statistics to nucleotide sequence data. It takes account not only of allele frequency differences among populations but also of how different alleles are from one another. We'll see that the combination of the two kinds of data may provide additional insight into the evolutionary relationships among populations. In particular, &Phi&ST is a measure of how much additional evolutionary distance arises when populations are subdivided, where the measure of distance includes not only excess coalescence time but also the amount of time since the sequences diverged.
