Molecular evolution: patterns of nucleotide and amino acid substitution

It probably won't come as a surprise to you that nucleotide substitutions occur more commonly at the third codon position in protein-coding genes than at the first or the second, but we'll talk about some other patterns that may not be as obvious. Our discussion will lead us to modify our formulation of the neutral theory of molecular evolution a bit.
