Climate change in the northeastern U.S.Projected climate "migrations" for Massachusetts and Maine, showing the approximate climate expected under the lowest and highest emission scenarios studied by the IPCC. From Figure 4 of Clmate Change in the Northeast.
Last October the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) released a report by the Northeast Climate Impact Assessment (NECIA), Climate Change in the Northeast. As illustrated in the graphic to the left, that report projected dramatic changes in regional climate – even under the low emission scenario.
Effect of rising temperatures on codWater temperatures suitable for cod. Blue lines denote suitable thermal habitat for adult cod. Green lines denote suitable thermal habitat for young cod. Dotted lines indicate marginal habitat. From Figure 5 of Confronting Climate Change in the U.S. Northeast.
On Wednesday, UCS released a second report from the NECIA, Confronting Climate Change in the U.S. Northeast. The report projects that
  • 100-year coastal flooding could hit New York City once every 10 years.

  • Increases in water temperature could make Georges Bank unfavorable for cod.

  • Conditions for spruce/fir forest might no longer be found anywhere in the northeastern U.S.

A New York Times article on the report appeared on Thursday.
