Michael Lemonick explains “Why Senator Brownback doesn't understand science” at Time Bottom line:

The discovery that God's direct intervention isn't necessary to explain some particular aspect of the natural world doesn't in any way suggest God's non-existence (look up “atheistic” in the dictionary, Senator). Except to those whose faith is pretty weak.
