Last June, delegates to an international convention in Busan, South Korea approved a resolution recommending to the General Assembly of the United Nations that it form an Intergovernmental Science-Policy
Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). On Tuesday, the General Assembly accepted that recommendation. Here are a couple of paragraphs from the United Nations Environment Program's press release:
The new body will bridge the gulf between the wealth of scientific knowledge on the accelerating declines and degradation of the natural world, with knowledge on effective solutions and decisive government action required to reverse these damaging trends. No countries met the 2010 target for stemming biodiversity loss. Let's hope that IPBES is more effective.
Its various roles will include carrying out high-quality peer reviews of the wealth of science on biodiversity and ecosystem services emerging from research institutes across the globe in order to provide gold standard reports to governments.
