Special Office Hours:Friday Oct. 16 3:00-4:30.

The Midterm will cover all readings and lecture material from the sections on "Aims and Methods of Science" and "Physics and Reality". The test questions will be based on the study questions and homework questions you already have. The lecture outlines also should be helpful in preparing for the test. Make sure you can fill out the relevant details of the outlines.

Test Format:

Part A. Understanding Basic Concepts. Maybe around 35% of the test.

Here you will be asked to define or explain specific concepts and their importance in the context of the course, or you will be given a pair of concepts and asked to explain differences and connections between them.

Ex. What is the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, and why is it philosophically important?

Ex. What is a Bridging theory, why are they important in science?

Part B. Understanding the Logic of Testing. About 15%-20% of the test.

Here you will be given a concrete case of hypothesis testing like that in Homework #1, and asked to answer the same questions.

Part C. Short Discussion questions. 40%- 50% of the test. Here you will have some choice, e.g. do 2 out of 3. These questions will be similar to the homework exercises in scope and length.
