Overvieew Textbook Lecture Schedule Readings Lecture Notes Resources Home

Text

I've decided not to use a textbook for the course this year, although I've used the second edition of Hartl & Clark's Principles of Population Genetics (Sinauer Associates; 1989) in the past. The third edition (1997) is also a good book, but it's less comprehensive than the second edition, and I found that I used even the second edition too little to justify adopting it as a textbook. The list price for the third edition (from Sinauer's web site) is $89.95, which is a bit steep for a 481 page textbook. But if you need a good, single-volume reference work on population genetics, you'd be hard-pressed to find one any better. Gillespie's Population Genetics: A Concise Guide (Johns Hopkins University Press; 1997) provides a very nice (and very concise) overview of the field. The list price at JHU Press website is $25.95.

Virtual copies of the lecture schedule, the list of suggested readings, a collection of lecture notes for the course, and a list of related resources are available here.1 You should plan to check the lecture schedule regularly, because I'll be adding links to related information and updating lecture notes for all of the lectures. I will also be updating the list of readings as the semester moves along.

Online links to readings will be provided to accompany some lectures. Many, perhaps most, will be accessible only if you are witnin the UConn.Edu domain. Some will be accessible from some other universities.

1I should warn you that the on-line notes are not yet complete and that they haven't been revised to reflect the contents of this year's version of the course. If you want printed copies of the notes, I advise you to wait to print them until just before lecture.
