I've just posted notes for today's lecture on extinctions. Sorry for not getting them up sooner, but Irene threw a wrench in the works. I had them ready to post last night, but even though I have power at home, my Internet connection went down. I'll have an outline for our case study discussion posted by Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
August 2011 Archives
Due to the possibility of hazardous travel conditions around the state following Hurricane Irene, classes are canceled on the Storrs and regional campuses on Monday, Aug. 29.That's the message on the front page of UConn Today this evening. I'll post a revised lecture schedule some time tomorrow.
I've posted notes for Monday's lecture -- assuming that it happens. So long as I don't lose power (and so long as Darwin stays up), I'll post notes for Wednesday's lecture some time this weekend.
Be sure to check UConn's Emergency Closings Information site, call the information line (860-486-3768), or check local news Monday morning if you have any doubts about whether Irene will prevent us from meeting on the first day of class. Here's a graphic from Google that should update the forecasts as more information comes in. If you zoom in on Connecticut, the track goes right over Hartford (or at least it did Friday afternoon when I posted this. It was over Manchester this morning.).

Mendeley is a freely available bibliographic database. I'll be using it to update the list of sources I cite in my lecture notes. If you install the free desktop client, you should be able to synchronize a local copy of the sources with the one on the web. Just as with Endnote, Papers, and other alternatives, the desktop client Mendeley has features that allow bibliographies to be automatically generated. It can also export references to other bibliographic software.
If you use Mendeley on the web, you'll probably want to click the "Recently added" button so that you can see new references as I add them.

I've finished updating the lecture schedule. Now due dates for all of the projects, in-class peer evaluations, and case-studies are specified. I can't promise that we won't shift the dates a little, but I'll do my best to stick to the schedule as currently announced.
A fresh set of notes for the first couple of lectures should be available by later this week. I'll post a note here as soon as they are.

I'm just getting started on setting up the course website. If you click on the Schedule page, you'll see what I mean. I'll have the lecture schedule fleshed out by Monday, including a (tentative) schedule for projects and the like. Check back then if you'd like more information.
By the way, I've had a couple of people e-mail me asking about a textbook. We won't be using a textbook in this course. I have an extensive set of course notes that you'll find online.1 We'll combine those with selected readings from the literature. Everything will be available on-line, though you may have to be on campus (or use the VPN) to access some of the items from journals.
